FAQ about Indications & Dosage Drug

What is a dosage form?

Each dosage form may also have a number of specialized forms such as extended-release, buccal, dispersible and chewable tablets. The strength is the amount of drug in the dosage form or a unit of the dosage form (e.g. 500 mg capsule, 250 mg/5 mL suspension). The route of administration is the way the dosage form is given.

What are indications for drugs?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies indications for drugs in the United States. Indications for drugs can be classified in two categories: Non FDA-approved, also called off-label indications. We will discuss how indications for drugs are established and the differences between these two categories of indications.

What is labeled indication?

If the FDA determines that there is enough evidence to approve the drug for the indication (treatment of the disease), the indication becomes a labeled indication for the drug. The approval by the FDA means that the company can include the information in their package insert (product label) regarding the use of the drug for that indication.

What is a dosage regimen?

More about Dosage and Administration. The dosage regimen is the frequency at which the drug doses are given. Examples include 2.5 mL twice a day, one tablet three times a day, one injection every four weeks.
